Key Stage 3 Curriculum
The Key Stage 3 curriculum provides students with a broad and balanced educational experience that develops academic knowledge, practical skills, personal confidence and preparation for future learning pathways.
Academic Core
English
English underpins learning across the curriculum and equips students with the literacy and communication skills required for everyday life, employment and further study. Students develop reading comprehension, written communication, speaking and listening skills, critical thinking and functional literacy for adulthood.
Mathematics
Mathematics develops numeracy, logical reasoning and problem-solving skills essential for independent living and future employment. Students develop financial literacy, mathematical reasoning, data handling skills and confidence in applying mathematics to real-life situations.
Science
Science encourages curiosity, investigation and understanding of the world around us. Students develop scientific knowledge, investigative skills, problem-solving abilities and an awareness of health, technology and environmental issues.
Humanities
History
History enables students to understand how past events have shaped modern society. Students develop critical thinking, analytical skills, literacy, communication and an understanding of democracy, citizenship and British values.
Geography
Geography develops understanding of people, places and environments. Students gain global awareness, environmental understanding, research skills and knowledge of sustainability and contemporary global challenges.
Religious Education
Religious Education promotes understanding, tolerance and respect for different beliefs and cultures. Students develop cultural awareness, understanding of ethical issues, discussion and debate skills and personal reflection.
Creative, Digital and Practical Learning
Art
Art provides opportunities for creativity, self-expression and personal achievement. Students develop creative thinking, confidence, artistic techniques and emotional expression through a range of media and processes.
Textiles
Textiles introduces students to creative design through fabric, fashion and decorative techniques. Students develop design and making skills, creativity, fine motor control, planning and an understanding of materials and production processes.
Design Technology
Design Technology enables students to combine creativity with practical problem-solving through the design and manufacture of products. Students develop technical skills, project management, innovation, resilience and an understanding of materials and manufacturing processes.
Cookery
Cookery provides essential life skills that support independence and wellbeing. Students develop food preparation skills, healthy lifestyle choices, budgeting, meal planning, organisation and practical skills for adulthood.
Horticulture
Horticulture provides valuable opportunities for outdoor learning, wellbeing and vocational development. Students develop responsibility, environmental awareness, practical gardening skills, teamwork and confidence through hands-on experiences.
Media Studies
Media Studies introduces students to modern communication and digital content creation. Students develop critical analysis skills, understanding of media influence, photography and video production skills, digital communication skills and creativity.
Information Technology
Information Technology prepares students for an increasingly digital world. Students develop digital literacy, safe online practice, research skills, presentation skills and confidence using technology effectively.
Personal Development
PSHE and Citizenship
Students explore relationships, wellbeing, personal safety, financial education, healthy lifestyles and citizenship, helping them become confident and responsible members of society.
Physical Education promotes physical health, resilience, teamwork, confidence and positive lifestyle choices.
Careers Education
Students begin to explore future aspirations, employment opportunities, workplace expectations and their own strengths and interests.
Duke of Edinburgh Taster Programme
Replacing Outdoor School, the Duke of Edinburgh Taster Programme introduces students to volunteering, leadership, teamwork, outdoor challenges, physical activity and skills development. The programme develops resilience, confidence and independence whilst preparing students for participation in the full Duke of Edinburgh Award at Key Stage 4.
