Key Stage 4 Curriculum

At Key Stage 4, students continue to study a broad academic curriculum whilst accessing personalised option pathways that reflect their strengths, interests and future aspirations.

Core Subjects

All students continue to study English, Mathematics, Science, Religious Education, PSHE and Citizenship, and Physical Education. These subjects provide the essential academic foundations required for adulthood, employment, training and further education.

Key Stage 4 Option Pathways

Students select option subjects that best support their individual interests, strengths and future destinations.

Humanities

History

History continues to develop analytical thinking, literacy and understanding of society, culture and citizenship. Students develop research skills, critical analysis, evaluation of evidence and strong written communication.

Vocational and Practical Learning

Cookery

Cookery plays a central role in preparation for adulthood and independent living. Students develop cooking techniques, nutrition knowledge, budgeting skills, meal planning and kitchen safety awareness.

Horticulture

Horticulture combines therapeutic learning with practical vocational skills. Students gain experience in plant cultivation, grounds maintenance, sustainable growing practices and environmental projects. The subject provides progression opportunities into landscaping, horticulture and environmental services.

  

Creative Arts Pathways

Fine Art

Students explore drawing, painting, mixed media and personal creative projects while developing creativity, technical skills and self-expression.

Textiles

Students develop skills in fabric design, construction and textile-based creative processes, encouraging innovation and practical creativity.

Graphics

Students explore visual communication through digital and traditional design techniques, developing creative problem-solving and design skills.

3D Art

Students create work through sculpture, ceramics, model-making and mixed media, developing technical, creative and spatial awareness skills.

Photography

Photography develops students’ creative, technical and observational skills through digital imaging, composition and visual storytelling, preparing them for further study and careers within the creative and media industries.

Creative arts qualifications develop creativity, confidence, resilience, problem-solving abilities, portfolio-building skills and preparation for further education and creative careers.

Digital and Media Pathways

Information Technology

Information Technology allows students to extend and refine their digital skills. Students develop advanced digital literacy, workplace technology skills, data management, digital problem-solving and an understanding of technology within modern employment.

 

Employability and Leadership Pathways

ASDAN Employability Skills Award

The ASDAN Employability Skills Award develops the knowledge, behaviours and practical skills required for employment and independent living. Students develop workplace communication, teamwork, customer service skills, interview techniques, job application skills, professional conduct and organisation.

Sports Leaders Award

The Sports Leaders Award provides opportunities for students to develop leadership, organisation and communication skills through sport and physical activity. Students gain experience in coaching, mentoring, event organisation, teamwork and decision-making while developing confidence and employability skills.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Award forms a central part of the Key Stage 4 enrichment programme. Students participate in volunteering, physical activity, skills development and expedition activities. The programme develops resilience, leadership, teamwork, independence, community engagement and employability skills whilst providing a nationally recognised award valued by employers, colleges and training providers.

 

Creative Performance

Music

Music remains available as an option subject for students wishing to continue developing their performance, composition and creative skills. The subject promotes confidence, collaboration, self-expression and emotional wellbeing.

 

Therapeutic Support

Therapeutic interventions remain embedded throughout the curriculum and support students’ emotional wellbeing, communication and readiness to learn. Provision may include occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, emotional regulation support, therapeutic mentoring, sensory integration programmes and social communication interventions.

This holistic approach ensures students are supported academically, socially and emotionally throughout their educational journey.
